Brothers and sisters of PCMR. Like many of you, I have been privileged enough to ascend to 144Hz gaming. I purchased a Asus VG248QE monitor a while back and out of the box the colors are pretty washed out. Luckily there was a thread that linked to some great settings and an ICC color profile that makes this monitor shine! While I had the thread bookmarked, Unfortunately the OP deleted his post and all of the comments after a few months.
The frustrating thing is when you Google this, nearly everything links back to this above post. Luckily I was able to piece together a few guides and find everything once more. You'll notice that below I'll be fairly redundant when wording things. I'll say the model of the monitor a bunch and bold certain things often. It will sound like marketing speak or like I'm some shill but I promise this is only an attempt to make this thread more searchable for the next guy. I had a heck of a time finding all of this again. Hopefully this thread will help others. :) Basically, I'm going to create this thread and host some mirrors on Google Drive so that hopefully no one will need to struggle to find this info again.
This is all of the information that I've found to make the Asus VG248QE 144Hz gaming monitor's colors and settings less washed out and much better color.
These are two very very good guides to read:
Tom's Hardware Asus VG248QE 144Hz gaming monitor color and OSD configuration
AND

Don't worry, if you don't know what an ICC profile is, This is the guide on how to install one of the ICC profiles in Windows.

Edit: A buddy confirmed that the above ICC profile worked on his linux computer (only tested with an nvidia card) without issue. His instructions for Mint Linux: "In Linux Mint. Click "Menu" Type "Color" Then "Add Profile" Browse to the ICC, and "Add" After add profile, click the dropdown, select other, then browse. Just verify that the profile you browsed to is the one selected, and you never have to look at it again. "
I hope this helps someone else!
You sir, are an amazing human being.
I was searching for this exact thing, and a glorious brother linked me to this thread!
I couldn't be happier!
I'm now going to save this thread (Copy and paste it into a Word document with hyperlinks, and back up the ICC files on my HDD)
Thank you again!
I'm here from the future to tell you that the PC monitors ICC profile completely destroys your blacks and you shouldn't use it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/3c8fpi/the_old_thread_for_just_bought_a_glorious_asus/ctlfmid this one is pretty good
so im testing out all 3 presets
1st: very dark, muddy whites, might be good for night sessions, not a fan
2nd: too red, weird how stuff like saturation isnt mentioned, and i cant change the brightness at all, its greyed out
3rd: mixture of 1st and 2nd, its very dark, whites are muddy, slightly too reddish not a fan
stole these settings that i really like from tomshardware.co.uk: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2260823/asus-vg248qe-settings-color-profile.html
Theater Mode Contrast 83 Saturation 42 Colour temp is User Mode and all colour settings to 83 Skin tone Natural Sharpness 50 Trace free 40 ASCR ON ( i enjoy having a bright monitor when I game.. but this is up to you. Adjust the brightness as you wish if you'd like this setting off)
haha i thought i was the only one. Thank you for posting this, this is probably my favorite setup with a few tweaks here and there.
I did the PC Monitors recommended OSD settings along with the ICC profile, but now my monitor seems a bit too red. Is this normal or did I do something wrong?
Assuming you followed the instructions, keep in mind, if you've been running the monitor at stock settings, your eyes may need time to adjust. Run it for a day or too and give it time. It seemed almost TOO RICH at first to me, but I held up an ipad and compared it to another monitor in the room and realized it was actually normal and rich.
The stock settings are super washed out but the brain has a neat way of just getting used to it. Anyway, just run the settings like that for a day and you should adjust again.
Thanks so much! Any idea why it was deleted?
No clue. Could have just deleted his account? I dunno really. It just is a bummer when you're googling all that info any every single thing points to that deleted thread. Heh. Hopefully this is helpful though.
I love you too. <3
tft central is a great resource for this type of thing, very professional. EDIT: That monitor uses the 24"WS AU Optronics TN Film (M240HW01 V8) panel.
Does anyone know a good calibration website?
Ive been on one before but i cant remember what it was... ...it has a black background, and you scroll through the calibration tools and images left to right?
Thanks! Just got this sweet monitor today and your guide helped a lot.
I've downloaded / applied the nvidia profile and it's working like a charm.
Now to (maybe) enable Lightboost...
Lightboost
Hey, I'm getting this monitor in a couple days and was wondering your overall thoughts on it in terms of color, lightboost, and the setup process. Thnx.
Why not? It almost completely removes motion blur.
It's a personal preference. Usually, people does not notice the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz. When I used LightBoost, for about a month, I noticed a huge difference between 120Hz and the 144Hz I was used to. I just hated it and went back to 144Hz without Lightboost. And I had so much trouble going back to the "default settings". Plus, games usually have a Motion Blur setting you can uncheck.
I was actually looking for this because I switched to Windows 10 and made clean install because switched to differend SSD and user folder was from 7 originally.
ANYWAY I did find that ICC-profile from the depths of my old SSD. To me it does give slightly better results than ones from PC Monitors, though I'm not professional and it's completely based on what I perceive. Also found some drivers I dug up from somewhere, which replaces that generic PnP driver. Using Tom's Hardware OSD setting.
Mirror for color profile (hash matches one I had): http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/icc_profiles/asus_vg248qe_svet.icm
All my files: https://mega.nz/#!0J5xSLbZ!uNSMgZ510uAF5Dg4PxXqmcqaNUqYJZvPmcXxpWjx88A
Also just switched to Win10 and was looking for this.
I installed the pcmonitors.info Nvidia ICC profile, installed your driver included here, and then set the calibration to the one found on TomsHardware (but cranked up the brightness, I find all these guides have the monitors crazy dim IMO). Now the colours really pop, blacks don't seem too crushed, and photos all look great (unlike in Win8 when I set this up with an ICC profile)... I think I've found the best config for me!
What recommended setting do you guys like more? The Tom's Hardware or PC Monitors? And which one do you like better with CSGO?
I like the ICC profile with Toms Hardware's settings, then fine tuning at http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/.
Just had one of these bad boys delivered, building my machine next weekend so I'll shave this for later. Thank you OP!
I had the same thought when I was use to using like 80 something brightness... my eyes didn't have time to adjust and I was like wait, what? this can't be right, but it's perfect to me now. Same brightness as most of my other displays too. I just this this one has the ability to be STUPID bright.
My assumption is this is the best # of lumens for regular use, but also not so bright that it whitens out the colors. Check out those articles for more detail but both sites recommend a very low brightness setting.
Well, how come the brightness is set so high as default?
Good question. Another good question is why are all the default values so terrible. If you ever get an answer from ASUS on this, let me know. ;)
Just read the reviews, try the recommended OSD settings with the color profile loaded and give it a whirl. It only takes a second to revert back.
Give it a day of use though. I promise it's a good thing. Obviously everyone has different taste though, so set it up how you want. But try it and see what you think.
You're really hung up on the brightness. Just test it as is without messing with it for an entire day at least. Then pass judgement. Promise.
For an accurate test, totally disable flux and everything. Only use the recommended settings and profile. Rock that for a day and then report back.
I wouldn't monkey with settings until you let your eyes settle in. But flux is going to screw everything up for your test. Once you know you like the settings, THEN reenable flux to see if you even need it anymore.
In the end, personal preference trumps all! :)
Sorry for the late reply, but do you have the brightness set to 90 with the color profile loaded?
NO U!
It's ok. Yeah, I went with the recommended OCD settings along with the windows ICC profile.
NO.
I love YOU!
Hi Just ordered the monitor & I'm a total noob. If I understand the post correctly, the best setting is "PC Monitors recommended OSD settings for the Asus VG248QE. (with the ICC profile loaded)" ? I first turn off LightBoost? then set the setting -> Load ICC Profile and I'm done?
I haven't messed with light boost. I only set the display settings on the monitor and then installed the ICC profile.
PC Monitors recommended OSD settings for the Asus VG248QE. (with the ICC profile loaded)
New to PCMR here (first post), but longtime PC enthusiast. I'm generally a little OCD about calibrating sound and visuals.
I've found that for my preferences, using the ICC profile from PC Monitors but the guide and settings from Toms Hardware works best, then fine tuning with this website: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/
For Trace Free, I thought 20 looked best when testing with this useful web page: http://www.testufo.com/#test=photo&photo=alien-invasion.png&pps=1080&pursuit=0&height=0
Hope this glorious addition to the thread helps!
Sadly, this doesn't really do much for me. The "perfect" settings are both way too dark. I mean 35 brightness ... That looks really shitty for me.
I use the standard settings now and it looks way better.
edit: Adjusted to 80 brightness, now it looks ok. But looks weird with less than 60 brightness imo.
edit 2: Theater settings, 85 brightness, r 96 g 92 b 88, contrast 80, skin tone reddish. Now it doesn't look grey anymore, and the colors look proper. When the screen is completely black it looks a bit grey-ish though.
Every time I try to add the ICC on the colour management ---> device step, nothing appears after I click add.. This seems to be the same problem with a couple of people too.. Any ideas what to do??
Thank you, thank you and thank you!
Built my rig about a year ago and finally upgraded my 8 year old LCD... Wow this is a great monitor, every game seems new again!
Right on man! No problem!
After performing the PCMonitors recommended settings along with the AMD ICC profile, I've noticed some ghosting (I guess I'd call it that) of models.
Strafing while looking at a model causes a trailing whitish image
Do you have lightboost on or no?
I don't believe so.
I redid the OSD and actually found the RGB settings, and that seemed to take care of it.
The problem was most likely the Trace Free setting. 60 (default) is your best bet (80 is good too), which was reset when you reset your OSD settings. Anything lower leaves trails, and 100 over traces like crazy.
No problem. Same thing was happening to me after I followed the Tom's Hardware advice. Took me a while to search and figure out, but I found the culprit and got rid of the terrible ghosting.
No clue
I'd just like to point out that these color profiles seem to mess up the gamma and crush blacks, at least for me. Don't know why, but if you notice that minecraft nights seem far darker than before that might be part of it. Might check with this. http://epaperpress.com/monitorcal/gamma.html Edit: If anyone knows a way to keep everything looking as nice as it does in these color profiles without the crushed blacks, it would be nice to know.
I also noticed this and was hoping someone would have a fix or a better profile. Anyone :(?
Find anything on this? Just recently picked up two of these and I loaded the NVIDIA ICC with the gamma corrections and it's just DARK. I have to run it at factory defaults in order to have it look "okay".
Nope, my best solution was to just mess around with the gamma and contrast myself. Unfortunate.
I wound up using the 144hz settings and ICC here:
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1730425
Edit: Mirror for the profiles and a couple others: https://mega.nz/#!p50kkayY!PciAylD0qzsgomrNaXNCekw37KZkSEP08sSzTGNGlis
I'll upload the 60 and 144 hz ones here shortly. Gotta locate them on my system first.
That would be great, every one i have tried has been awful so far.
https://mega.nz/#!p50kkayY!PciAylD0qzsgomrNaXNCekw37KZkSEP08sSzTGNGlis
This is all of the profiles I have. I only use the ones named 60hzVG248QE.icm and 144hzVG248QE.icm. They work the best for me, personally.
Quick question: I've applied the PC Monitor's ICC profile and adjusted the monitor settings. In the Nvidia control panel, should I select "Other applications control color settings" or "Use NVIDIA settings"? Switching between the two gives a different look.
Don't use the nvidia settings. That will over ride the ICC profile.
So I've had this monitor for a while, and I've been unable to calibrate it properly. Using a gamma of 2.2 results in vivid, believable colors, however, crushes blacks and whites. Using a config that doesn't crush blacks and whites results in the colors being washed out. Is there anything I can do? Normally I use theater mode, a contrast of 60, Nvidia desktop color settings that produce 2.2 gamma while not crushing whites (though it does crush blacks), and the Tom's Hardware's RGB settings and the Asus_Vg248_qe_svet icm. Currently I'm on standard with a contrast of 75, the Tom's Hardware colors, and the icm I mentioned before (using the ASUS_VG248QE_Nvidia icm resulted in a red tint) and I have washed out colors.
Why is the difference with or without using icc profile so big? When I downloaded the ICC profile provided (for Nvidia) and installed nothing changed? (Color Management 2x - Check "Use my settings for this device" - Add "Asus VG248QE (Nvidia) - Set as default profile - Advanced Tab - Change System Defaults - Add "ASUS VG248QE (Nvidia) - Set as default profile - Advanced Tab - Check "Use Windows display calibriation" - Close)
Did I messed up somewhere?
Hey man.. thank you for your hard work.. i have not yet bought the monitor but since im on a budget im finding out about every single detail and problem of every monitor within my budget.. i am probably gonna buy this one and i just wanted to thank you in advance... :D
Hi, I am about to purchase this monitor and just wondered how you are finding it?
It's between this one and the BenQ XL2411.
I love it. ONCE you correct the color. Hence this post.
I haven't messed with the benq but I'm happy with mine for sure. Not sure how the colors on the benq are.
Thank you for replying! The colour issue is the one thing that was putting me off, but as so many people seem to have fixed this and I now have your post saved, I shall proceed to purchase.
Please don't delete your post any time soon!
I'm happy its working for you guys. The screen seems very dark for me when i use either option? Cant find a happy medium.. I've tried both solutions above.
any advice?
What an amazing post. I've used this monitor for well over a year and just accepted how bad and washed out it looks. This ICC profile method completely fixed it. Thanks so much for taking the time.
So if I used the ICC profile provided by PC Monitor, do I still need to adjust the OSD of the screen or the ICC itself will take care of it?
If ICC will take care of that, what should be the base OSD setting for the ICC to be good, because I played already with the screen OSD settings?
i just got this monitor and i dont see what u guys are talking about.... is this because im used to seeing 60hz? i dont really see a washed out look u guys are talking about and i never changed my color settings
Yeah.. when I first got mine, I didn't feel like it looked bad but when I used these settings, I felt like it looked better.
Whether or not that's just my brain making me think that, I dunno.
Thank you brother, just got a second one of these and needed this info. You da real MVP.
I'm running into an issue where as soon as I start any video it appears washed out. I have applied the ICC profiles and my colors now match my second monitor perfectly. If I move the video to the other Acer monitor it's significantly darker. The instant the video is on my ASUS once more it gets suddenly bright. If it's halfway between desktops and is over 50% on the Acer monitor it shows the correct colors. It's almost like all my movie players are looking at some different settings somewhere.
I've included a comparison image where the red line is the divide between my monitors. You can see that the Asus is fully capable of displaying the correct colors but then just doesn't. I know i'm just missing something.
Edit/Solved: I'm dumb. At some point when trying to get the monitor to look right I set all video settings in Nvidia control panel to use a different set of settings. Leaving this up here for shame.
what is an ICC profile and how do i use it
Read the post man, it has a link and it literally saays: "Don't worry, if you don't know what an ICC profile is, This is the guide on how to install one of the ICC profiles in Windows."
I'm a big noob when it comes to all of this! I'm really sorry! but I'm really confused. So am I supposed to go to the guide linked (Tom's hardware) or just do the "ICC profile" ??? Would I just configure the settings to toms osd and then go off the guide or....?
I was thinking about using this video as a guide off of youtube, but is it even correct?? He doesn't even use the big 1- minute step thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlIE_JtqSis
ICC profile + settings is the way to go. Display settings alone didn't do it for me, you must do the profile! Now my monitor looks amazing, I swear.
Might be a dumb question, but should we use both the ICC profile and one of the recommended OSD settings listed above?
When I finished installing ICC profile and clicked the last checkbox, I literally said to myself HOLYFUCK. This is amazing!!! 10/10 would calibrate again. Damn. Wow. Thank you!
So I tried a bunch of these ICC profiles, all with the corresponding monitor settings. They all look like shit. With the brightness set to the recommended levels (according to each ICC profile), my screen is super dark. When I crank the brightness up, the colors look like shit. Any advice?
hey... HEY!!! BRO!
You are awesome! Thanks for gathering all this information making it so easy to make my final decision. I was going back and forth on which 144hz gaming monitor I should get for mainly CSGO and I saw this monitor at a local store a month a go and kind of planned to buy this at the end of December. Today I was sniffing around and I stumbled upon this, thanks in advance!
Hey I know this thread is months old but I want to ask where can you change the RGB? I am in splendid mode: standard, and I don't seem to find where to adjust the RGB. Can someone please help me :(
in the menu -> down to Color -> down to Color Temp.() -> and again down to User Mode
Op i know this is extremely old, but could you PM me through the EXACT steps i need to take to make my asus vg248qe less washed out? what i mean is, i read through the entire post, clicked on every link and even downloaded the nvidia icc profile, idk what to do. I can tell you im probably the least tech savvy person on this subreddit, things like this really confuse me and I just cant figure out the instructions given in the links and your post. If you see this, help is much needed. Thanks!
I should give you gold for this post. Wish I had the spare money man. Thank you. This is literally the only reason why I haven't purchased this monitor yet. I was worried about the washed out color issues but with this it seems like purchasing it wouldn't be an issue. Thank you.
Ah yes very true. After that whole ordeal yes people should not buy reddit gold. But don't worry I won't be buying gold anymore. I have in the past but no more will I do such a thing.
Don't mention it man! Once you add the ICC profile and adjust the OSD settings the colors look very rich. I dig it. Very awesome. Just sucks you have to tweak it so much but it works great for me!
If you install the ICC profile and boot up a game will it stay the same or will the settings change? I have this monitor but I haven't installed any ICC profile. I have just been running with the settings recommended from toms hardware and I would like to get a little less washed out colors.
I've heard some games don't honor the profile but I haven't ran into this issue yet.
